Dev Patel’s action film “Monkey Man” breaks even in 3 days, grosses $10.1 million at the box office

Dev Patel’s Monkey Man, a revenge thriller set in India and released by Universal Pictures, had a strong opening in North America, debuting in 3,029 theaters and raking in an estimated $10.1 million. This marked a successful start for Patel’s first directorial venture, a politically charged action film in which he also stars. With a modest budget of $10 million, Monkey Man was initially dropped by Netflix before being picked up by Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions.

Inspired by the legendary Hindu deity Hanuman known for strength, loyalty, and courage, Monkey Man draws parallels between Hindu mythology and modern superhero iconography like Superman. The story follows Kid, played by Patel, a fighter in an underground club who sets out to avenge his mother’s tragic death by infiltrating the elite circles of a city reminiscent of Mumbai.

Meanwhile, Godzilla vs. Kong retained its box office crown for the second consecutive week, pulling in $31.7 million and maintaining its global success. With a production cost of $135 million, the film showcases the epic team-up between Godzilla and Kong.

In contrast, Disney’s 20th Century Studios’ The First Omen struggled to make an impact, landing in fourth place with $8.4 million domestically and an additional $9.1 million overseas. This horror prequel, costing around $30 million, follows a lineage from the 1976 original and stars Nell Tiger Free, Tawfeek Barhom, and Bill Nighy. The subdued reception of The First Omen allowed Sony’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire to clinch third place with $9 million in its third weekend.

Continuing its strong performance, Warner Bros.’ Dune: Part Two added $7.2 million in its sixth week, further solidifying its success at the box office. Noteworthy international success came from China with Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron, an Oscar-winning Japanese anime film setting new records for non-Chinese animated features by grossing over $70 million in just five days.
