Post Article 370: Varied Reactions and Concerns in Jammu & Kashmir Communities

The aftermath of the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir has led to various reactions and concerns among different sections of society.

Initially, several groups in Jammu, including traders, displaced individuals from Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK), refugees, and backward classes, supported the decision. However, their views have now evolved, expressing discontent and apprehension regarding the consequences.

Traders, while initially backing the move, now voice dissatisfaction. They relied on support from the local administration for their businesses after Article 370’s removal. However, the shift to mandatory purchases through the Government-e-Marketplace negatively impacted local industries, causing economic strain.

Supporters of the BJP’s promises, particularly members of the Scheduled Caste (SC) community, face challenges post Article 370’s removal. They received eviction notices and experienced setbacks in accessing land and promotions, leading to disappointment and unrest.

The Scheduled Tribes (STs) also express concerns about the potential loss of their status. They highlight attempts to dilute their reservation by including upper castes under the ST category, affecting their political representation and benefits.

People displaced from Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) haven’t seen significant changes in their lives post-abrogation. However, they demand better representation and voting rights in Jammu and Kashmir due to their permanent residency status.

Refugees from Pakistan acknowledge positive changes, such as participating in local elections and accessing government schemes. Yet, they advocate for reserved Assembly seats to ensure political empowerment, seeking fair representation after years of neglect.

Overall, the diverse communities in Jammu, who initially supported Article 370’s abrogation, now highlight concerns and complexities arising from the aftermath, emphasizing the need for addressing these evolving challenges.
