Chennai Super Kings recently made an announcement through an official statement that Ruturaj Gaikwad will be the new skipper for CSK in the upcoming IPL 2024 season. This decision was made by MS Dhoni, who is a five-time IPL winning captain. The news was revealed just before the IPL 2024 opener between CSK and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. It will be the second time that CSK will begin an IPL season without Dhoni as their captain, with the first instance being in IPL 2022 when Ravindra Jadeja took over but was later replaced by Dhoni mid-season due to a rough start for CSK.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, the new captain, has been praised by CSK as an essential part of the team. He has played 52 matches for CSK since joining in 2019. Gaikwad, who has also represented India in ODIs and T20s, had an impressive season in 2023, scoring 590 runs in 16 matches with a strike rate of 147.50. With Dhoni stepping down as captain, Gaikwad is all set to lead CSK in the upcoming season, receiving best wishes from the team for the 17th edition of the T20 league. The move marks a significant transition for CSK as they prepare for a new chapter under Gaikwad’s leadership, while still benefitting from Dhoni’s presence as a player.
