Hardik Pandya given serious caution before leading MI for the first time: ‘Leadership abilities under scrutiny’

Mumbai Indians are gearing up for a new chapter with Hardik Pandya stepping into the role of captain for the upcoming IPL 2024 season. Pandya, known for his dynamic skills as an all-rounder, has returned to Mumbai Indians where he initially launched his IPL career. After leading Gujarat Titans to consecutive finals, Pandya has now been entrusted with the leadership responsibilities at Mumbai Indians, succeeding the five-time IPL-winning captain Rohit Sharma.

While Pandya’s leadership abilities have been proven on the big stage, replacing a successful captain like Rohit Sharma presents a significant challenge. This season marks the first time Rohit will be playing under Pandya’s captaincy, leading to some reports of unrest within the team following the captaincy change.

Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody believes that Pandya, being a respected player and a consistent performer, will receive strong support from his teammates in the upcoming season. However, Moody also acknowledges the pressure that comes with captaincy, especially when facing losses, as it leads to scrutiny of decision-making and leadership skills.

Pandya led Gujarat Titans to IPL victory in their inaugural season in 2022 and guided them to the final in the following season, where they were defeated by Chennai Super Kings. In Mumbai Indians, Pandya will be leading a squad of prominent Indian players including Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah.

Moody emphasizes that winning matches can often overshadow tactical decisions, highlighting Pandya’s strategic acumen and the support he will receive from both senior Indian and overseas players. Pandya’s leadership journey with Mumbai Indians will kick off against his former team, Gujarat Titans, on March 24 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
