During the recent IPL 2024 match between Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings, Delhi’s captain Rishabh Pant found himself in hot water after his team was penalized for breaching the Code of Conduct. The game took place at the Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam. Despite Chennai Super Kings handing Delhi Capitals their first defeat of the season, under the leadership of new captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, the Capitals managed to secure their first victory in 2024 after suffering consecutive losses on the road.
Rishabh Pant was fined due to his team’s slow over rate during the match against CSK. This marked their first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct concerning minimum over rate violations, resulting in a hefty fine of ₹12 lakhs for Pant. Interestingly, this incident was the second time a team captain faced a monetary penalty for maintaining a slow over rate in the IPL.During the recent IPL 2024 match between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings at the Chidambaram Stadium, Shubman Gill of Gujarat Titans faced a similar situation, receiving a fine of INR 12 lakh for an offense. On the same day, Pant, despite facing setbacks due to a car accident in December 2022, showcased an impressive performance by scoring his first IPL fifty since missing out on the 2023 season. Partnering with Prithvi Shaw and David Warner, Pant’s quick 51 off 32 balls played a crucial role as Delhi Capitals set a challenging target of 192 runs.
Although Chennai Super Kings struggled in the beginning, the middle-order batsman Ajinkya Rahane’s quick 45 off 30 balls provided momentum. The iconic MS Dhoni then stole the show with a classic display, smashing boundaries and sixes to score an unbeaten 37 off 16 balls. However, Delhi Capitals’ bowlers staged a strong comeback in the final overs, restricting CSK to 171 for six, resulting in a 20-run victory for the visitors.
This victory marked Delhi Capitals’ first win of the season, following losses to Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals in earlier matches. On the other hand, Chennai Super Kings faced their first defeat after a successful start in Chepauk, with wins against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans.
