Sidhu’s comparison of ‘dog chained with gold’ in reference to Mumbai Indians’ Rohit Sharma-Hardik Pandya situation

The return of the prodigal son as the captain of Mumbai Indians, replacing the five-time IPL-winning skipper Rohit Sharma, has sparked controversy in the world of cricket. Leading up to the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, social media outcry from MI fans was followed by verbal attacks on Hardik Pandya at the venues of Mumbai’s matches. He faced boos, jeers, and ‘Rohit-Rohit’ chants from spectators. Former India cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu, returning to cricket commentary for IPL 2024, shared his thoughts on the Mumbai Indians situation. In a video, Sidhu praised Rohit Sharma’s performance this season, expressing admiration for the player. He compared Rohit’s stature to that of an elephant, respected even when covered in dust. Sidhu’s poetic caption highlighted the dynamics within the Mumbai Indians team.

Prior to Mumbai Indians’ first match in IPL 2024 against Gujarat Titans, Sidhu had commented on the controversial decision to name Hardik Pandya as captain over Rohit. Drawing from his own experience playing alongside multiple captains in the Indian team, Sidhu emphasized that playing under Hardik doesn’t diminish Rohit Sharma’s standing. Mumbai Indians had appointed Hardik as captain in December 2023 following his successful stint with Gujarat Titans, where he led the team to an IPL title win in 2022. This move marked the end of Rohit Sharma’s 11-year captaincy with Mumbai Indians, during which he guided the team to five IPL titles.

Under Hardik Pandya’s leadership, Mumbai Indians faced a rough start in IPL 2024, suffering defeats in their initial two matches. Their upcoming match against Rajasthan Royals presents an opportunity for the team to turn their fortunes around.
