Virat Kohli Urges to Avoid Using ‘Embarrassing’ ‘King’ Tag: A Call for Change

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru marked a new beginning at the RCB unbox event at the Chinnaswamy stadium. They changed their name from Bangalore to Bengaluru and unveiled a new jersey with a touch of blue, symbolizing a fresh era for the franchise. Virat Kohli, the former RCB captain, made a sincere request to fans to stop calling him ‘King,’ a title given to him by the media and fans which now embarrasses him. During the event, Kohli addressed the crowd, expressing his discomfort with the ‘King’ label and requesting to be called simply Virat. This plea from Kohli could signify the end of an era, similar to when Sachin Tendulkar asked fans to stop calling him ‘God of cricket.’ Kohli’s request may or may not be honored, as he continues to receive immense love and admiration from fans. The ‘King’ title was first used by an Indian cricket fan in Australia, who presented Kohli with a jersey labeled ‘King Kohli’ during India’s tour in 2014. Kohli acknowledged this gesture and advised the fan’s son to work hard to become a cricketer during India’s tour in 2018.
